Today I thought it would be great to share 3 habits to help you capture sharper imagery. Let's jump right in!
1. Practice
When you learn how to focus your camera, you may feel like you know everything about it. It's lovely to feel pride in new skills but as photographers we should always be pushing ourselves to learn more. Practice focusing by shooting a certain object or subject at different focal lengths; review and see what you like best. Slow down and really focus (your attention and your camera). You will appreciate your photography practice more and, surprisingly, may find that it's easier to focus if you need to do so quickly! Even when you begin to think you've learned all there is to know, practice, practice, practice, and practice some more.
2. Pay Attention
Typically, if a photographer is not fully focused on their subject when they are capturing an image, the first thing to get out of whack is focus. We focus on so many other aspects of technicality that perhaps the most fundamental -- focus -- can get lost in the shuffle. To make beautiful imagery it's imperative that we pay attention to all of it!
Don't distract yourself with getting the shot as quickly as possible so you can move on, or do a 'just okay' job because you have hours of editing waiting for you at the computer. Whatever the reason, if your images aren't sharp, your practice will begin to deteriorate.
3. Slow Down
This may be one of the biggest challenges in photography in general. Take your time in between shots. Mastery takes ... well, time. Especially when you are shooting wide, you need to take extra care and know where your focal point is in every image. If you are trying to get through a shoot as fast as possible, there's a good chance your images will start to lose sharpness. Creating sharp imagery takes mental focus.
Now, get your camera out and practice! If you aren't sure how to select your focal point, take a look at your camera manual or Google a tutorial to learn the basics of focal points. Learning this will help you to elevate your artistry!
