As parents, we know that it can sometimes be hard to get our children to cooperate with - just about anything. Is your homework done? Go brush your teeth again. Eat your green beans.

You don't have to be a professional photographer or even a hobbyist to get an eye roll from your kiddos when you ask for a picture. Even if you only ask your kids for photos on special occasions, you can be met with resistance. Or maybe your children let out a not-so-subtle groan every time you're doing something fun as a family and you pull out your phone. (They know what's coming!)

Here are a few ways to make photographing your own kids easier!

Acknowledge Their Cooperation

People, in general, love being rewarded. When you want to capture imagery of your children and everything goes smoothly, let them know that you appreciate it when they listen and have good attitudes. Give them words of affirmation. If you really want to, reward them with a treat. 

You don't want your kiddos to associate your camera, or the camera on your phone, with negative feelings. How can you make taking pictures an activity that you all enjoy? 

Ask the Kids What They Want To Do

Kids are imaginative! They also want to help and be involved with what their favorite adults are doing. So, why not name them "Creative Director" of their photos?

As a mom, I am always inspired by my children's creativity. Include your kiddos in your process. 

This can be as simple as allowing your kids to do something funny or silly as you take pictures. Or maybe they want to show you a trick on the trampoline? When children are having fun, they're much more cooperative!

Take a Break

If your kiddo isn't having it, don't force it. Take some time to create connection with your child. The important thing about this time should be that you're together.

Go Somewhere

Why not let your kids choose their own adventure? Tell them you'll be bringing your camera along so you all can remember the fun you had. Maybe even let them take some photos of their own! Chat with them about the setting. Let them give you some photography tips! It's easy to let children take the lead when you're all having a blast together.

You don't need to go anywhere "fancy". Where are your favorite places? Is there somewhere new you've been wanting to go or explore? Use this time to make memories! 

The point is this: the imagery you take of your own kiddos should elicit the warmest feelings and memories! You don't want your kids to look back on pictures and think about how frazzled you were that you couldn't get the perfect photo. Focus on connecting with your children; focus on how much you love them. Your kiddos might even say, "Okay, Mom!" the next time you ask for a picture!
