Today, I'm excited to share my tips for finding great locations, which will hopefully help you find some new locations!
- There's an app for that.
Of course there is! The Sun Surveyor app allows you to not only scout locations effectively, but to plan and get the perfect shot. Different modules allow you to see exactly where the sun (or moon) will be at your location at a certain time. Sun Surveyor can also give you a golden hour time range. It is so helpful. There are many other similar apps available, too.
- Put Google to work for you.
Maybe you're new to the area and you have absolutely no clue where to begin. Perhaps you're just plain tired of your current locations. Google Street View can help you find a perfectly picturesque field, or a vintage beach shack. Be sure to note or write down addresses, then get out there yourself (with property owner permission, if necessary).
- Safety first.
I can't stress this point enough! Be aware of animals, insects, or other potential dangers in your new shooting location. This holds especially true if you are shooting a session on or near water. If you aren't sure, always consult with your clients about the exact location you have in mind for their session.
- Stay up-to-date.
Scenery can change, and quickly at that. You don't want to scout a location months before a session, take clients there, and find a completely different setting. Be mindful of this and ensure that you have everything just so for your clients. Visit your favorite locations from time to time and make certain they're still as lovely as the last time you visited.
- No trespassing.
If there is any doubt in your mind that the location you love is available for a professional photography session, make sure you contact the property owner. Many state and national parks require licenses be obtained. If you are shooting on privately owned (whether business or personal) property, you must have permission to do so. Share some pictures with them if your clients agree. Play nicely. If the business shares your work, it's free (or nearly free) marketing for you.
For fun, what are your most helpful tips for finding a new location?
