Streaming service as a whole took a giant leap forward this month, with the release of Disney Plus. And if you bundle it with Hulu, you now have an especially awesome selection of movies - particularly documentaries - available to you. With options for viewers with all kinds of interests, the media giant that is Disney is now practically a "one-stop shop" for those of us who enjoy non-fiction films. Of course, with all of these options come the choices you have to make! I'm sharing some of the best documentaries on Disney+ and Hulu right now. If you're a photographer, stream them while you edit. If you're a photographer whose busy season is coming to a close, a client, friend, or simply a visitor to my little corner of the internet, settle into your favorite cozy spot and relax with these Disney Plus and Hulu recommendations!
The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story (on Disney+)
If Saving Mr. Banks or Mary Poppins is one of your favorite movies (both are also available to stream on Disney+, by the way), you'll love this documentary movie about songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman, the music writers behind some of Disney's most nostalgic and well-known songs.
Jane (on Hulu)
Directed by Brett Morgan, this documentary stands out among the myriad profiles on Jane Goodall and her work. This piece gives us a more personal look at her life, her relationship with her camera man and first husband Hugo van Lawick, and her earlier years in Tanzania. A must-see for anyone who loves Jane Goodall's story and how she is viewed today.
Waking Sleeping Beauty (on Disney Plus)
The Black Cauldron almost broke Disney. How in the world did Walt Disney Feature Animation fight its way back from the movie that almost bankrupted it, and usher in The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and the only animated movie to ever be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, Beauty and the Beast? All products of what is now regarded as the Disney Renaissance. This non-fiction film directed by Don Hahn recounts an incredible story that could only be Disney's.
The First Monday in May (on Hulu)
Few events are as exclusive and beautiful as the annual Met Gala. As the title says, the Met Gala is held annually on the first Monday of May, which is when the Met unveils a new fashion exhibit each year. It's always a dazzling sight, and of course it also gives us "commoners" a peek at who the top celebrities and designers of the year are! This documentary available to stream on Hulu takes us behind the scenes and shows us what it takes to design, produce, and execute the Met Gala.
Free Solo (on Disney+)
Not for the faint of heart (or those afraid of heights!), this non-fiction movie follows Alex Honnold as he tops Yosemite National Park's El Capitan, free solo. That means without a rope or the assistance of other safety equipment! Obviously, this undertaking required the heart of a daredevil, world-class skill, and ridiculous planning.
What will you be watching this holiday season?
