Althea Tower always has busy hands. It's hard to put a label on someone who is so talented in so many ways - artist? carpenter? interior designer? - but I guess that's why labels are starting to seem outdated. Althea is so many things and yet completely, entirely herself. There's no one else like her. I'm so grateful we were able to interview her recently. If you're in need of some creative inspiration or an encouraging push, please read on.
Tracy Sweeney (TS): Thank you so much for allowing us to interview you, Althea! Please introduce yourself and your business!
Althea Tower (AT): Hello! Thank you very much for hosting me here, Tracy! To your readers, hey there! My name is Althea Tower, and my business is Riveted Woodworking & Design. My workshop is located in Bristol, Rhode Island. I service Rhode Island and most of Massachusetts.
TS: Briefly walk us through your story. How did you get started?
AT: I began this journey because I knew I wanted to create my own path. I started with hand painted signs. This led to me learning and discovering a love for power tools and what I could create myself. The empowering feeling of not only creating something but also doing it in a method you never thought possible.
TS: Tell us more. What are you most proud of?
AT: I build custom pieces for homes and businesses. I specialize in built-ins. I do everything from scratch. I design my pieces based on a customer's needs and wishes. I create each piece to fit a certain space and style. I am proud of how far I have come in five years. I am mostly self taught so I take pride in each and every piece I create. I am proud for not giving up, for pushing through each obstacle and valley.
TS: What advice do you have for a female business owner starting her journey?
AT: Learn about business finances early! Don't just wing it. Also, ask for help and network network network. There is no fast track, it's a journey and it will take time to figure out who you are and what your business truly is. I actually have a blog post I wrote about what I wish I had known prior to starting! You can read it here! https://www.rivetedwoodworking.com/blog/10-things-i-wish-i-did-when-i-started
